Old Skip Lunch
No, not “Skip Lunch is old.”
What I’m laying down is this: An old song from Skip Lunch, from when he lived in Jamestown, NY, which is where I met him. The song is called Lowdown. The MP3 is here.
I dig this. Not sure what kind of music it is. It’s sort of punk, but not generic.
Skip wrote it, played guitar and SANG! (he doesn’t do that much.) Bob-o-matic played drums on this. No one remembers the bass player’s name. Bass players can be like that.
Pass it on. All hail our favorite China corespondent, without whom, there would have never been a 10,000 Maniacs (Skip taught their bass player bass, and taught Natalie to come out of her shell, by giving her lots of LSD.)
But far far worse, I probably never would have been in a cool band without Skip.

Patrick….. You have no idea how fucking awesome Skip is. I had hours of his noodling around not only guitar but of him with a “The Cat” by Active and a combo through a vintage Space Echo through vintage custom made 50’s and 60’s tube amps.
Some things to learn here:
Huge lesson learned. Back up your hard drives. Lost the majority of everything I had.
We did a “mansion recording” where he knew some wild chick that had a mansion in Pennsyltucky. A real manson. In the middle of fucking nowhere. He invited me up to check the place out so I loaded up the VW microbus with various implements of destruction. DJ Rig, some of his amps, DR. Sample, laptop with good recording programs and our goodest bestest friend Lena.
The wild chick played keyboard. She had a monster sweet keyboard but I’m not so sure she could play it. I never found out anyway. She was really great at making ambient noise. Skip set up The Cat, I loaded some cool samples onto the Dr. Sample (which I bought on the way up there and had no clue how to use it). I fired up the laptop and set the mic to proper levels and somehow magic happened. Very possibly the coolest ambient set you have ever heard in your entire life. Went on for about 20 minutes with waves of crescendo and oddities and then reverse oddities repeated, tweaked, echo panned and just out bizarrity. Lena joining around 10 minutes into the song. She found a gong or Chinese cymbol and gently and very subtly twitched it at just the most perfect times. We all were in a trance state at that point yet somehow all knew the perfect time to end. Think “Bardo Pond” yet not. Something entirely different.
Being that were baked I somehow recorded over that song with the next recording we did. We were all totally bummed when we found that out. The next couple of songs were pretty cool but nothing like first one.
What I am trying to say is that Skip is a musical genius and you really should get everything he’s ever put out. Some of it is pretty cheesy in his New Wave days. Sorry for outing you Skip!
Another thing Skip, I still have a bunch of your “Thanksgiving Day Massacre with Johnny Satan” CD’s if you want me to rip them to MP3. And a bunch of other stuff from other recordings. I can host them if you want.
Last thing. Skip has done some songs over at http://dealmachine.org/ with Michael and others. You can also search online for VH (Voodoo Hawaii). I found them at JunkRecordingStudio.com but I don’t think the site is up anymore. He’s recorded a bunch with Steven Zeigler (Daddy’s Protien) so there are other searches you could do. The Steven Zeigler stuff is pretty hard core. He’s versatile.

Skip’s a god on his own, AND he taught me to rock. (Which makes us forgive him for also more or less starting the 10,000 Maniacs. And actually, before the rest of the world heard them, when the Maniacs were tearing up bars in Western NY, before “the man” got a hold of them, they had an edge.
Natalie used to SCREAM into the mic and roll on the floor and knock people’s drinks and even tables over. It was quite a sight!

Daddy’s Protein MP3s with Skip on guitar WOULD be up on Stink Fight, but Steven Zeigler wouldn’t give them to Skip. Damn odd if you ask me.

I have some of the Daddy’s Protein CD’s at my house. I should be home in a few months and will get them to the masses. Send Steven an email and ask him what the fuck his problem is. I hear from him once in awhile. He’s been pretty cool with me. If you don’t get a response let me know and I’ll rattle his cage.

You must be on crack cocaine… The tracks you are referring to were recorded by Jesse Loya in LA around 1990… I got a shitty cassette test dupe (which I only recently just found) with no vox on it. It’s on my show Fatty Woodlawn… all my stuff is on line and available… if it ain’t it’s because it’s in deep storage and will have to wait til I got nothin’ better to do.
re: Skipp… it’s true. That recording he did with Daddy’s Protein was on fire. What happened to it? Jesse accidentally erased it. We never got a master of it. Like it got erased that day or the next… a tragedy. The Voodoo Hawaii stuff is also available at myspace.com/wingchunclub.
re: Fight!? You know I’m down! Let’s get it on!
tough and rough aloha, Steven

Howdy, Steve!
