Ditto on Quietustouch's remarks on the sound of a shotgun racking a shell. One of the most distinctive sounds you can hear, especially in the dark....and doubly so if your not the one holding the gun. heh.
I am an avid hunter & sport shooter (bench rest) and I have ALWAYS championed the shotgun as the weapon of first choice for home defense. Mainly for three reasons. Two have been discussed, MWD pointed out the ease of use/point & spray nature of a shotgun. Quietustouch noted the distinctive sound they make without needing to even firing. Lastly and equally important is the fact the pellets will not go through several walls to your neighbors bedroom and kill their kid, as a rifle or a large caliber pistol round may.
Just mt two cents, but I've made this speech for years, & I felt like typing. :)

A big plus with a shotgun is the intimidating sound they make without even being fired. Racking the slide on a pump shotgun makes a distinct sound that almost everyone knows from TV and movies and definitively communicates to most people that you are prepared and mean business. I have only had two occasions where I needed to strongly encourage some one to get off of my property and both times the situation was immediately resolved by that sound!

Thank you. All good stuff, Rowyn. Debra Jean read it too, and dug it.
---------------
Wife and I just watched "Tremors." I'd never seen it before. I loved it, for what it was.

And it's good to learn that shotguns are good for defense against graboids as well as against junkie thieves!

Wow, I'm really sorry to read that you both had to go thru that. I read some of the other posts on the other site and it reminded me of a womyn's self defense course I took, a private one taught by a womyn martial arts and yoga teacher. In any "situation" you want to avoid confrontation. The best tool she suggested carrying on your person is a metal pen, great for poking eyes and other soft tissue areas. In public if someone makes you nervous tell them what a great _________whatever colour or design, shirt or jacket they have on, what gorgeous brown eyes you have, anything that lets them know you can identify them, they are less likely to pick you as their victim. After avoid is to stop, hence the pen, kick to the shins, grab at the throat and various escape and temporarily stun moves. If that doesn't stop them, you do great bodily harm to keep them down, again, a metal pen thru the chest, throat, eyeball, ear, and if all else fails you go for the kill move.

Not meant for a quick self defense course, just to agree that you don't want to "shoot to kill" if you don't have to. You also need to know how not to get your weapon turned on you.

Great luck and have fun! You've drummed up my urge to go to the shooting range, and maybe even read up on the n ewer shotguns. I bet they are much lighter, too!
Angels on your pillows and faeries dancing, too!
Namaste
