Amen, Daddy.

Ditto, Nunzio. I really like the tool viewpoint. Daddy has said essentially the same thing to me many times.

Maybe it's just semantics, or the way my alleged mind DOESN'T work, but I don't view firearms as weapons until they're USED as weapons. Until then, they're tools---tools for putting food on the table in the case of hunting, or tools for recreation in the case of target shooting / competition.

Certainly firearms were/are DESIGNED to be used as weapons but until they're used for that purpose they exist in a kind of emotion- and semantically neutral state, as far as I'm concerned. Their potential for use AS weapons depends on who has his/her hand on them.

I get into interesting discussions with nervous bosses when they see me whip out my knife at work----I use it to open boxes or removed plastic strapping from containers. They'd prefer I use one of those plastic handled razor knives with the blades recessed (so they can't be used as weapons.) I just tell them: Don't sweat it. If I wanted to cause trouble here, I'd show up with my pistol.

But see, they view a TOOL as a WEAPON. Makes 'em nervous. The same "thinking" applies to legislators who are afraid of guns. When talk of gun control comes up, I say: "Yeah. I like how HEROIN control and METH control and COKE control and WEED control worked out, so I figure gun control will meet with the same extraordinary level of success."

We don't need gun control or drug control. We just need self control.
